Increasing Postsecondary Opportunities for High School Students Through Campus Visits
Buckhannon Upshur High secured a $10,000 grant to take students and teachers to visit postsecondary campuses. Students have visited technical schools, four-year colleges, and businesses. In the early 1990s, the State of West Virginia recognized that K–12 students in its Appalachian region received academic labels that influenced whether or not they attended college. K–12 students who were designated as not “college material” lacked the appropriate encouragement or means to break out of poverty. Visiting campuses encourages them and helps them to realize that they can make it to the winners circle! Sara Stankus, Buckhannon Upshur High School, Buckhannon, W. Va.
