CORD's Experience in Brazil
STEM Brasil
Worldfund and CORD launched the STEM Brasil program in August 2009 to prepare gifted students in poverty-stricken school districts for science and technology careers and tertiary education. A two-year intensive project will serve 2,400 students in three public high schools in the northeast city of Recife, Pernambuco with the goal of expanding the program to over 1,000 public high schools in impoverished districts throughout Brazil over the next five years.
Contextual Mathematics in Paraná
A successful training project involving more than 900 teachers from the state network of mathematics teachers of the State of Paraná, Brazil was carried out to modernize the pedagogy and improve the teaching effectiveness of the participating mathematics teachers through exploration of contextual teaching methodologies. The goal of generating a paradigm shift in the behavior and attitude of the participating teachers was successfully achieved, particularly in their lecture preparation and delivery. The project design was built around four face-to-face workshops and on-line scheduled intervention extending over a period of 18 months. Findings and statistical analyses are included in the reports.
