"It's In The Bank" Financial Literacy Program
Northwestern Regional High School #7
Northwest Community Bank
Winsted, Connecticut
The Northwestern Regional High School # 7 and Northwest Community Bank partnership was nominated by an NCPN member for its “It’s In The Bank” financial literacy program that increases financial literacy among high school students, provides an honors level course curriculum in the business education department, and provides a meaningful career pathway for students pursuing business and finance in a rural area. In 2006, after several months of collaboration and planning, Northwest Community Bank opened a branch at the school to offer banking services to campus students, faculty and staff. The branch is operated by a bank employee and several student interns. Students enrolled in the Honors Money, Banking and Business course create a resume, submit an application, and interview with the bank’s human resource personnel. The students are paired with a bank mentor and must successfully complete a 20–25 hour training program at Northwest Community Bank before they are qualified to work at the campus branch office. “It’s In The Bank” provides students and staff with a remarkable financial literacy opportunity and training program offering banking, finance, and technology experiences while opening new markets for the bank.
In addition to national recognition among their Tech Prep and Career Pathway peers, as the 2009 second place winner the partnership will receive a $2,000 cash prize. About the Hull-Parnell Award
The Daniel M. Hull and Dale P. Parnell Partnership Excellence Award was established in 1994 by the Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD) and the National Tech Prep Network (now known as the National Career Pathways Network) to encourage partnerships between education and business to integrate meaningful worksite opportunities into their programs and to showcase the best of these programs. The award is named in honor of two visionaries who promoted student academic and career success for more than three decades and is supported through the educational interests of the Caterpillar Foundation and Texas Instruments.
Hull-Parnell Award Sponsors
Caterpillar
The Caterpillar Foundation plays a primary role in Caterpillar’s philanthropic activities, funding initiatives relating to education, the environment, health and human services, civic and community activities, culture and art, trade and policy organizations, and other special groups. While each of Caterpillar’s offices and facilities worldwide supports local efforts in their individual communities, the Caterpillar Foundation provides funding and support from a corporate perspective. Formed in 1952, the Foundation has distributed almost $200 million to support education, health and human services, and civic, cultural, and environmental causes.
The Caterpillar Foundation has provided funding for the Hull-Parnell Partnership Excellence Award (formerly known as the Exemplary Worksite Learning Award) since 1997.
Texas Instruments
For more than six decades, Texas Instruments (TI) has been committed to supporting education. They focus especially on core areas, such as math and science, to help
foster the next generation of high-tech workers. Graduates in these disciplines are the lifeblood of high-technology companies such as TI. Their commitment covers campuses across the United States and around the globe. TI values partnerships and programs that support educators and promote excellence. By leveraging financial resources, offering expertise, and donating equipment—TI strives to improve education and make higher education more accessible to underrepresented women and minorities.
