Legislative Update: Finalizing Perkins Legislation - Action Needed Now | |
Dear Friends of Tech Prep and Career and Technical Education:
After months of relative inactivity, it appears that Congress may finalize the Perkins reauthorization legislation in January. Now that it seems to be a real possibility, those who have an interest in the content of the Perkins legislation need to make their voices heard so that the legislation reflects what is needed and desired by those who care about optimizing student success in academics and in career and technical education. Especially important to Tech Prep students and professionals is the potential for the loss of separate funding for Tech Prep.
NTPN is sending a letter to all Governors, Senators, and Representatives in states which have Representatives on the House education committee, especially states that have Republican Representatives on the committee. (See link to sample letter below.) The House Republicans are the only group that has consistently voted against the three issues outlined in the letter from NTPN. House Democrats as well as Senate Republicans and Democrats support these issues that are appropriately included in the Senate version of the Perkins bill.
Using the sample below as a guide, please draft your own letter with a new first sentence and change anything else that will personalize it to your own situation. The attachment mentioned in the letter, “The Case for Career Pathways,” as well as the fax numbers of all members of the House committee can be downloaded by clicking on the links below.
Please let me know if you need assistance, or advice, in what kind of letters to send to different groups. There is little time left to influence these important issues in the pending Perkins legislation. Please take action and encourage others to do so.
Thanks.

David Bond, NTPN Director
