Full-Day Workshops

Take advantage of your trip to Nashville and arrive early to attend one of the Optional Full-Day Workshops preceding the general conference. Four workshops will be sponsored by the Center for Occupational Research and Development (CORD) on the following topics.

Contextual Learning, Applied Academics, and Tech Prep
This workshop is designed for high school teachers new to applied academics courses, science and mathematics educators wanting to learn more about contextual learning and applied academics, and Tech Prep coordinators looking for an overview of the relationship between contextual learning, applied academics, and Tech Prep. Expect a highly interactive day involving hands-on laboratories in math and science, the "ABCs" of contextual learning, and a panel discussion with employers on the value of applied courses.

Adult Learners in a Contextual Environment
This workshop will present the concepts of contextual learning and explore ways to integrate these concepts into programs for adults. Workforce trends will be discussed and participants will help design occupationally focused programs for unemployed, underemployed, and other adult populations.

Integrating Learning Technology
In a hands-on environment, attendees will learn to use a variety of technologies as they work in small groups on an interdisciplinary project. The learning technologies will include digital camera use and editing capabilities, interactive videoconferencing, multimedia software, VCRs, the Internet, and computers equipped with general software applications. Technology and curriculum will be linked in a meaningful way throughout this action-packed day of learning.

Interactive Internet
This hands-on workshop is designed for experienced Internet users. Participants will work individually at computers throughout the day. Topics will include chat rooms, listservs, a history of the World Wide Web (WWW), cyberculture, and advanced HTML. Prerequisites include a familiarity with the WWW and the ability to use E-mail.

Get your Tech Prep program in gear with this series of optional one-hour workshops. Fine-tune your skills or explore new ideas—every session is designed to help you direct your program down the path to success!

Tech Prep 101
If you've just been assigned to a Tech Prep coordination function, or if you're an experienced practitioner wanting to brush up on the basics, these workshops are for you. Tech Prep fundamentals will be covered, including:

  • Applied Academics
  • The Essential Elements of Tech Prep
  • Community Connection—Putting Tech Prep All Together
  • Starting a School-to-Work Program
Postsecondary Issues and Trends
Topics will include:
  • Overview of postsecondary Tech Prep
  • The importance of state involvement in Tech Prep
  • Developing performance indicators
  • Developing core curricula, sequencing courses, and coordinating curriculum planning
  • Improving trust and student services through professional development
  • Designing and implementing Bridge programs

Technology in the Classroom
Topics will include:

  • Videoconferencing as an educational communication tool
  • Effective integration of software tools into today's classroom
  • WORKTECH—Work-based learning through telecommunication and multimedia technologies


Continuing Education
Course Credit

The School of Professional Studies of Fresno Pacific University is pleased to offer one or two semester units of professional development credit for attendance at the National Tech Prep Network's 1997 Annual Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, October 1–2 (Preconference) and October 3–4 (General Conference). The cost for each unit is $50. A written assignment will be required; it will be given to each registrant at the conference. Registration for professional development credit will be held on-site in the NTPN conference registration area.
