Web-based Professional Development for Counselors

Teaching Career Guidance Contextually is a 13-week graduate-level professional development web course for career guidance practitioners. It was developed by CORD for the South Carolina Occupational Information System to support implementation of effective career guidance programs. Participating career education professionals are encouraged to collaborate in the creation of an online learning community as they explore contextual strategies for teaching career guidance in their own schools.

Course participants are required to read theory and essays, just as they would in a face-to-face graduate seminar. Intense follow-up discussion takes place online—from the comfort of home or office. A vital feature of the course, however, is the real-world, classroom practicum in which participants try activities with students.

The webcourse will be conducted throughout the fall 2002 semester. Each week will require participants to engage in a minimum of 5–7 hours for reading, reflecting, discussing, and creating. Key course topics include creating and facilitating contextual career guidance activities.
