Teaching With Meaning and Making Connections:  The Convergence of CTE and Academics

Teaching the tech-savvy students of the 21st century should combine rigorous academics with relevant career education. To paraphrase Dale Parnell, the “father of Tech Prep,” our students are information rich but experience poor. They have difficulty making connections between their limited practical experience and rigorous academic content. Yet the ability to make connections is a key to learning. Students must see the “usefulness” of what they are learning if they are to master rigorous academic content. This workshop will focus on evidence-based practices that help students understand the real-world convergence of CTE and rigorous academics. Participants will learn new ways to use critical thinking strategies, projects, portfolios, and social networking sites.

http://www.cord.org/uploadedfiles/NATPL-logo-09-rgb-webcrop.jpgLeaders in Tech Prep and career education will have the opportunity to build on the declaration of principles, policies, and objectives put forth at the NATPL forum last year (Atlanta 2009). Launching the forum will be acclaimed speaker David Okerlund, a communications and behavioral modification coach who has taught speech and debate at Oxford University. In his book Managing the Margins of Greatness, Okerlund states that leaders must “learn how to identify even the minute changes so as not to miss some important element to achieve our goals.” The forum will include a regional overview, roundtable discussions, and regional meetings. Topic-specific breakouts will address career academies, enrollment management, programs of study, partnerships, state leadership, technology for consortium leaders, and best practices.
